Wisconsin doesn't use the ABC exam. It runs its own program under NR 114 — a General exam plus subclass exams matched to the processes at your plant. Here's how the whole thing fits together.
If you've been studying generic operator prep and wondering why nothing matches what Wisconsin is asking you, this is why: the DNR writes its own exams around its own subclass structure. What you're certified in depends on what your plant actually runs.
To be certified as a wastewater treatment plant operator in Wisconsin, you pass two things: the Basic General Wastewater exam, and at least one subclass exam covering a process your plant uses.
Every treatment plant carries a classification — basic or advanced — plus subclass designations matching its processes. Each plant must have a designated operator-in-charge certified at the plant's class level and in the same subclasses as the processes it runs. That's the mechanism that makes the subclass system matter: your certification has to mirror your plant.
No prior education or training is required before sitting for the exams, though the DNR recommends some classroom or online preparation.

The N and A5 subclass exams are 25 questions each, with a 12-month grace period to obtain certification once the subclass is added to your facility's classification.

Experience is documented on the Wastewater Operator Experience Form (3400-066A). One year means full-time employment at a treatment plant — or, for part-time operators, 1,000 cumulative hours over a minimum of twelve months. Experience forms go to your regional coordinator, not the statewide office.
Advanced certification requires ten points, with at least four coming from hands-on experience — meaning a minimum of four years of hands-on work no matter what else you accumulate. Six years is the maximum that can be credited.

The 240-hour requirement works out to roughly 15–16 college semester credits. Courses the DNR counts as wastewater-related include general and water chemistry, microbiology, fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology, soil science, aquatic toxicology, water resources, and water quality modeling.
Certification renews every three years at a $45 fee.

Rules that catch people out:
Hold a current wastewater or waterworks certificate from another state? Wisconsin has a reciprocity application — materials are on the DNR forms page. Reciprocity is evaluated against Wisconsin's requirements, so expect the subclass structure to be the sticking point: another state's broad Class III doesn't map cleanly onto Wisconsin's process-specific subclasses.
The DNR publishes a free study guide for every subclass, and those guides define exam scope — the exam is written from them, and your results letter reports which of their objectives you missed. Start there. They're on the DNR wastewater certification page, though several date from 2015–2016.
